"Reyes writes with conviction about the various ways imperialism transforms women into 'capital, collateral, damaged soul.' However, the women that appear throughout the book are not merely victims; in Reyes's radical cosmology, these women--these daughters--are rebels, saints, revolutionaries, and torchbearers, 'sharp-tongued, willful.' This book is a call to arms against oppressive languages, systems, and traditions."--Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Infused with Spanish and Tagalog, Reyes's beautiful, angry verse shines throughout. For a wide range of readers."--Library Journal, starred review

Invocation to Daughters is a book of prayers, psalms, and odes for Filipina girls and women trying to survive and make sense of their own situations. Writing in an English inflected with Tagalog and Spanish, in meditations on the relationship between fathers and daughters and impassioned pleas on behalf of victims of brutality, Barbara Jane Reyes unleashes the colonized tongue in a lyrical feminist broadside written from a place of shared humanity.

Praise for Invocation to Daughters

"Against violence against women, Barbara Jane Reyes rips and runs, jumping off Audre Lorde's 'the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house, ' Invocation to Daughters recombines registers--prayers, pleas and elegy--braiding a trilingual triple-threat, a 3-pronged poetics that enjambs and reconfigures the formal with the street, utterance with erasure, the prose sentence with the liminal. Invocation to Daughters reminds me of the 70's in the East Bay, when Jessica Hagedorn met Ntozake Shange and ignited a green flash seen from horizon to horizon. Barbara Jane Reyes is one of the Bay Area's incendiary voices."--Sesshu Foster

"Invocation to Daughters is a space for multitudes, a hypnotic collection that draws from family history--particularly the complex cultural gendered dynamic between father and daughter--in order to create a manual for emancipation from the interior and exterior binds that keep us from ourselves. Through prayers, calls to actions, and testimonies, Reyes invents 'a language so that we know ourselves, so that we may sing, and tell, and pray.'"--Carmen Gim nez Smith

Very good book!
Format: Kindle
I really enjoyed reading “Count my lucky stars”. It was a great sapphic romance - sweet, funny and entertaining. It was the last book in the series and it summed up all the three couples from the series perfectly. I really liked Margot and just the way she is and also I felt for Olivia because I am similar - I usually put other needs above my own. They were just great together - they balanced each other out. Very good read.

Great conclusion to this series!
Format: Paperback
Margot is sure that long-term relationships just aren't for her. Been there. Blew through the tissue box. Wrote the novel. Done that. All her friends found their life mate, and that makes social gatherings a bit awkward now, but it's fine, really. Even the wedding planning she's invited along to with her friends, that's cool. Well, it was, until Olivia, her long lost childhood friend, happens to be a wedding planner they run into. Margot and Olivia's first relationship didn't go so well, and Olivia has since been married and divorced. Margot thinks Olivia is still as much a beautiful goddess as ever, and opportunity knocks when Olivia is stranded with nowhere to go. Margot is happy to offer up a spare room, but even though she and Olivia are getting along swimmingly, and sparks are flying between them, is Olivia what she really wants? When their first voyage into the unknown was capsized, are they fated to be lost at sea once more, or will the stars guide them to a brighter future than they could ever have hoped for? I've followed the stars all the way to the end of the Written in the Stars trilogy, and what have I found? A trio of excellent stories about love, friendship, hardship, communication, and the self. Margot and Olivia make a fun and interesting second chance pairing, with Margot being the prickly pear, and Olivia being really sweet. Margot is rough around the edges partially because she has a difficult time trusting, which I understand, and that along with other factors compounds into miscommunication along the way. While this story can be read as a standalone, I think that readers who've partaken of the first two entries will have plenty to enjoy, with Brendon, Elle, and other favorites returning for their part in Margot and Olivia's story. Margot and Olivia have the opportunity for a second chance, but giving somebody you used to love a second chance is difficult, no? Margot asks a lot of Olivia, and I understand why, but in the end, love is all about taking that uncertain leap in hopes of landing together on your feet. Their intimate scenes are rather spicy, so don't expect anything closed door about their romance. Count Your Lucky Stars is the story of two girls who fell out of love doing their best to find each other again, and I'm counting my own lucky stars for having the pleasure of enjoying this story and these characters across an entire trilogy. Recommended for readers who believe in second chances, enjoy romance between disparate personalities, enjoy sapphic romance, and fans of this friend group's previous two stories, which I also recommend.
