The Guardians: The League of Nations and the Crisis of EmpireAt the end of the First World War, the Paris Peace Conference saw a battle over the future of empire. At the end of the First World War, the Paris Peace Conference saw a battle over the future of empire. The victorious allied powers wanted to annex the Ottoman territories and German colonies they had occupied; Woodrow Wilson and a groundswell of anti-imperialist activism stood in their way. France, Belgium, Japan and the British dominions reluctantly agreed to an Anglo-American proposal to hold and administer those allied conquests under "mandate" from the new League of Nations. In the end, fourteen mandated territories were set up across the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific. Against all odds, these disparate and far-flung territories became the site and the vehicle of global transformation. In this masterful history of the mandates system, Susan Pedersen illuminates the role the League of Nations played in creating the modern world. Tracing the system from its creation in 1920 until its demise in 1939, Pedersen examines its workings from the realm of international diplomacy; the viewpoints of the League's experts and officials; and the arena of local struggles within the territories themselves. Featuring a cast of larger-than-life figures, including Lord Lugard, King Faisal, Chaim Weizmann and Ralph Bunche, the narrative sweeps across the globe-from windswept scrublands along the Orange River to famine-blighted hilltops in Rwanda to Damascus under French bombardment-but always returns to Switzerland and the sometimes vicious battles over ideas of civilization, independence, economic relations, and sovereignty in the Geneva headquarters. As Pedersen shows, although the architects and officials of the mandates system always sought to uphold imperial authority, colonial nationalists, German revisionists, African-American intellectuals and others were able to use the platform Geneva offered to challenge their claims. Amid this cacophony, imperial statesmen began exploring new means - client states, economic concessions - of securing Western hegemony. In the end, the mandate system helped to create the world in which we now live. A riveting work of global history, The Guardians enables us to look back at the League with new eyes, and in doing so, appreciate how complex, multivalent, and consequential this first great experiment in internationalism really was.Binding Type: Paperback

Rock-Solid Mounts with Flawless Adjustability
Size: Standard--black, Size: Standard--black
Absolutely fantastic mounts! I couldn't be happier with this purchase. They are currently holding my 12lb surround sound speakers on the wall, and I have complete confidence in their sturdiness. They feel incredibly solid and well-made.
Installation was a breeze, and the range of motion is a real game-changer. Being able to swivel and tilt the speakers has allowed me to perfectly angle them towards my listening position, which has made a huge difference in my surround sound experience.
On top of the great functionality, they have a very sleek and clean look. The built-in cable management is a brilliant touch that helps keep everything looking tidy and professional.
If you're looking for a reliable, adjustable, and great-looking set of speaker mounts, look no further. These are top-notch, and I highly recommend them!

Great product!
Size: Standard--white, Size: Standard--white
Very sturdy and great value for money! Speakers fit perfectly. You can adjust the width and tighten around the sides of the speaker so they’re not loose on the platform. Offers proper stability for the speakers, they will not fall out of the wall if they’re installed correctly and not overloaded with weight. I have the Edifier R1280T speakers mounted and they’re roughly 10-12 pounds each.
**My only complaint which was not a big deal to me** As other people have mentioned, the white plate that hides the screws on the wall is not attached to anything. It was just hanging there loose with a gap between it and the wall, but I got these clear double-sided tape circles to adhere them to the wall and it worked !!! Very quick and easy solution. Maybe the seller could include a few clear stickies in the package moving forward?

These speaker mounts were better than expected for the price. The mounts hold the speakers securely also tilt and swivel to get the sound where needed. Well thought out design, easy to mount, looks great also. Mounting hardware was included. I would purchase again.

Almost perfect, absolutely fit for purpose, and a great value
Size: Standard--black
These are really, really close to being five stars, but because of my OCD tendencies when it comes to things being true and level, I can only go four. The way these mounts are made, speakers rest inside and on the inner surface of the L-shaped adjustable side brackets, and not on the large metal plate between them. Leveling on the fore-and-aft plane can easily be handled via the adjustment nut on the bottom of the bracket. But there is no provision for side-to-side leveling, so if the manufacturing of the side brackets is not within tolerance, you'll wind up with a speaker that's ever-so-slightly wonky...which is the case with ONE of my mounts. The bubble is still between the lines, but it's kissing the left line. Most would not care about this, and I'm not too bummed about it, but I am able to see that much out-of-true with the naked eye. It's not enough to pursue any kind of remediation, because the value on these really is awfully good. They are solidly built, easy to install, and easy to adjust. The manufacturer is apparently improving the product as they go based on feedback, as some issues that have vexed other owners have not been a problem for me, such as the wall plates being or coming loose (the design now ensures they stay put once pushed back to the wall), or the adjustment nut and bolt rotating freely and not staying tight (the ones on mine are great and function as intended). For the price, these are really hard to beat, and I have a feeling all the mounts like this with the different oddly-named brands are made in the same factory. That being the case, get the cheapest ones, and the day I bought mine, these were those.
