A Strenuous LifeIn 1912 a young, American woman, Alice Ross (1890 1980), began a two year trip around the world. Her itinerary included Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Japan, China, Burma, Siam, India, Turkey, the Levant, Egypt and finally through Europe on the Orient Express. In 1912 a young, American woman, Alice Ross (1890-1980), began a two-year trip around the world. Her itinerary included Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Japan, China, Burma, Siam, India, Turkey, the Levant, Egypt and finally through Europe on the Orient Express. In the history of the earth, few people can have made such a comprehensive and leisurely journey, and essentially none of those would have been attractive, eligible women.

ÒIn Honolulu they liked me because I was game for anything in swimming, which counts more than anything there. In New Zealand I seemed more animated and had more initiative than the girls there. In Australia the reputation of the American girl has opened the way there for any who go, and in the Philippines I was simply Òa new girlÓ, and there new or old they are few and far between, and there are so many men that I think they would rush even a broomstick in petticoats. Now dear, I take no credit to myself, for I know IÕm only an ordinary being, and any girl would have had the very same experiences I had, for many men proposed and begged me to marry them.Ó So Alice summarizes her romantic adventures.

Progressive, intrepid, inclusive, athletic, curious, ambitious. Are these the qualities of an Edwardian woman? We had always known that my grandmother had had extraordinary opportunities to travel widely when young. Decades after her death the letters she had saved from her journeys were put in my hands. Read over her shoulder as this 22 year-old literally travels around the globe.

Alice Ross Garey is the daughter of an admiral. As one of very few Western women in Òthe orientÓ she has an all-access pass ensuring the hospitality of royalty and potentates in every nation. Yet her voice is that of a down to earth gal. The Queen of Hawaii and Sir Flinders Petrie are among the VIPs she meets. That 5-star hotel youÕd like to try? Alice slept there. She traveled by horseback, buggy, ship, sedan chair, camel, rickshaw, elephant, Wright airplane, automobile, and train.

SheÕs traveling through Europe only a few months before the outbreak of WWI. ItÕs like these letters are recording the end of a way of life; in a few short months, the world will be engulfed in the worst horrors of modernity and everything will change forever. Alice is getting home just in time

I should have looked somewhere else.
Format: Paperback
Not very helpful. I wanted a book that would help guide me through setting up a web server. There should have been a more complete step by step guide comparing traditional methods with newer updated methods.

Organized well. You can read it section by section. Fantastic information. Clearly presented.
I like this book better than "what to expect" because this one does a better job of what you'll ACTUALLY expect versus telling you the throngs of horrible things that could happen to you or your baby. I'd rather be informed than mentally prodded with scary information. On one hand, it's good to know what could happen, so the other books you've probably already ordered are good to skim through, but this book I recommend reading all the way through. Easy to read, you'll actually have TIME to read it because you can read the age your baby is instead of a book that's all mixed up and organized by diseases and threats. Clear photos and explanations and tips on how to make your life and baby's life easier and better. I've understood my baby's needs better because of this book. I feel really glad I got it because it was the only book that really helped my daily life with my newborn.

we loved this well-illustrated book
As first-time parents, we loved this well-illustrated book, recommended it to one couple, and recently ordered another for an expecting couple in our family. Rather than grouping content by topic, the book is ordered chronologically, starting with Day 1 and progressing throughout the first year. Don't expect to read straight through; there are lots of pictures, sidebars, notes, etc. This makes it easier to find and retain relevant information (as opposed to reading a 100-page section on "Diet and Nutrition"). Provides a thorough treatment of most of the common issues, fun discoveries and concerns you encounter as a new parent.
