For the John Bonham fan, for the Led Zeppelin tribute band, for someone just looking for a huge gong with a huge sound in a huge way...This 38" Paiste Symphonic Gong is pretty awesome. This remarkable gong has complex overtones and musicality bring up tremendous delight and joy!

According to auction notes, when the original Paiste Gong that Bonham played was sold, John’s use of the gong was “inspired by Carmine Appice, drummer with Vanilla Fudge, whom Led Zeppelin supported on their first US concerts in December 1968. Jeff Ocheltree, John's former drum tech recalls in A Thunder Of Drums that ‘...The first Paiste gongs had Chinese caricature letters on them. Later on they had Paiste on them. John knew how to ‘warm up’ the gong with a mallet – and he used it for definite dynamic effect in a couple of tunes, not just for bashing...’” While not a pyromaniac, John Bonham also would set his gong ablaze at the end of his solo in Zeppelin's “Moby Dick.” His roadie Mick Hinton had to set it alight using lighter fluid.

From Paiste, on their process: "We are the industry leader in discovering new mixtures and procedures, having introduced several alloys to Gong making, including one for which we received a patent. We use finished raw materials (round, flat disks) from several specialized foundries and rolling mills. We select these suppliers due to their specialized and superior technical abilities and large scale of operations."

From Paiste, on Symphonic Gongs: "Symphonic Gongs (SG) are flat gongs with a harmonic and universal sound structure. The sound character of these gongs can be influenced and varied through the nature of the stroke, as well as the size, weight, and composition of the mallets. By varying the striking points, highs, lows, and various sound mixtures contained in the entirety of the gong's sounds sphere may be extracted and played up."

Opinion on EWS
When I upgraded from Blu-ray to 4K Blu-ray, always wonder whether the transfer was good. This one was done well and you should like it. I watch on an OLED 83” FYI for comparison.

Excellent Remastering on 4k.. hits harder today considering the Epstein scandal
Curious about the Epstein Class... Kubrick pulls back the curtain with this one.

it's kubrick. it's a masterpiece.
i don't really like movies about couples but being kubrick, i gave it a chance. the cinematography is just so incredibly rich, not only with flashy scenes and beautiful colors and framing, but with all these referential easter eggs and nuggets of hints and symbolism and...oh my god it's just RICH. if you like psychological and mystery stuff, and photography, and lurid secret society stuff, this movie is incredible. i will watch it again for sure.

4k blu ray scenes freeze
The movie is good. The 4k blu ray froze at one scene and skipped ahead a few scenes. It makes me sad. Hopefully the blu ray doesn't freeze.

The 4K's Rating
I'm not sure what's going on with this release, as it gets praised by some, condemned by others. Very strange. For me, all the criticism of the colors in some scenes (like the teal & orange bedroom scene) makes no sense, because those colors do not appear as saturated and forceful on my Panasonic 4K player and Samsung 42" 4K TV. They look noticable, as teal and orange naturally clash at any strength. But they don't look entirely unnatural. As for the grain, it iS awful during the initial party scene, to the point of distraction. But as the movie progresses, it seems to weaken. I'm not sure at what exact point the distraction ends, only that I became fully absorbed in the movie before Bill's nocturnal "adventures." (As a matter of note, I don't oversharpen in the settings, and don't bump up saturation.) This rating is for the 4K. I've only watched about 20 minutes of the blu-ray, during which I encountered a 3-4 second sound dropout that was troublesome. As in SILENCE. It's something I intend to contact Criterion about, to see if this is an anomaly (in which case I'll initiated a replacement from Amazon). If it's a general problem, I'll ask Criterion for a blu-ray replacement. I want to watch more of the blu-ray before taking any action, in case there are more dropouts to report. BTW, the blu-ray looks quite good to me, altho I think the 4K is slightly more detailed.
