The Blackmagic Design Spares - Camera Fiber Converter - Dust Covers are a specialized set of protective caps designed for the unit that attaches to the back of the URSA Broadcast or URSA Mini. In a fiber ecosystem, these aren't just accessories—they are the first line of defense for the SMPTE 311M hybrid connection, which is notoriously sensitive to environmental contaminants.

The Vulnerability of Fiber

The Camera Fiber Converter sits in the most "exposed" position of the broadcast chain—carried on an operator's shoulder, placed on a tripod in a dusty stadium, or rigged in the rain.

  • Optical Integrity: The SMPTE 304 connector uses two tiny fiber optic ferrules. A single microscopic speck of dust can block the light path, causing the 12G-SDI signal to "sparkle" or drop out entirely.

  • Electrical Safety: Because the hybrid cable carries up to 240V DC from the Studio Converter to power the camera, any conductive moisture or metallic dust inside the port can lead to electrical arcing or short circuits.

  • Pin Protection: The internal multi-pin connector (which mates the converter to the URSA body) is also protected by a specific cover when the unit is stored separately from the camera.

Included in the Spare Set

A complete "Dust Cover" kit for the Camera Fiber Converter typically includes:

  1. SMPTE 304 Main Port Cap: A rugged, rubberized or metal cap that seals the main hybrid fiber input.

  2. Internal Interconnect Cover: A large plastic plate that protects the "umbilical" pins on the front of the converter (the side that touches the camera).

  3. 12G-SDI / XLR Caps: Smaller tethered caps for the local monitoring outputs and audio inputs on the side of the converter.

When to Replace the Covers

  • Loss in the Field: These caps are frequently "flicked" off during a quick rig-up and lost in the grass or a dark studio floor.

  • Tether Fatigue: The rubber tethers that keep the caps attached to the chassis can dry out and snap over time due to UV exposure.

  • Seal Compression: If the internal gasket of the cap becomes flattened or torn, it will no longer provide an airtight seal, allowing "theatre fog" or humidity to seep into the fiber ferrules.

Maintenance Protocol

Replacing the covers is step one; proper use is step two. Following these rules can save thousands in professional cleaning or repair costs:

  • The "Immediate Cap" Rule: The moment a SMPTE cable is unplugged, the dust cover must be snapped on. Air exposure for even 30 seconds in a windy environment can contaminate the optics.

  • Clean Before You Cap: If the converter port was accidentally left open, do not simply put the cap back on—this can "stamp" the dirt into the glass. Use a One-Click Fiber Cleaning Pen first.

  • Tether Management: Ensure the replacement cap's tether is securely screwed to the converter chassis. If it lacks a tether, use a small piece of aircraft cable or high-strength nylon cord.

  • Dry Storage: Ensure the inside of the dust cover is dry before applying. Trapping moisture inside the cap can lead to oxidation of the high-voltage electrical pins.

Expert Tip: If you are getting a "Sync" or "Optical" error on your CCU, check the inside of your dust covers. If they are dirty, they are likely transferring debris to your expensive fiber ports every time you "protect" them.

Are you looking for the SMPTE port cap (where the cable plugs in) or the interconnect cover (where the converter meets the camera)?

My go-to sublimation paper for crafting
Size: 8.5"x11"
I've used several sublimation papers, and this one has worked really well for my crafting projects. The colors transfer bright and vibrant, and the images come out crisp with good detail when using the proper sublimation printer and ink. The paper feeds smoothly through my printer and feels like a good quality weight—not too thin and not overly thick. I've used it for tumblers, keychains, and other sublimation projects, and I've been happy with the results. I also appreciate getting 110 sheets in one pack because it lasts a while, especially when working on multiple projects at once. Overall, this is a reliable sublimation paper that gives consistent results and is great for crafters or small business owners.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Easy to use and produces vibrant prints
This Hiipoo sublimation ink has been a fantastic upgrade for my EcoTank printer. The autofill bottles fit perfectly into the ink tanks - no syringes, no mess, and no wasted ink. Refilling is quick and hassle-free, which makes the whole process so much easier. The print quality is excellent. Colors come out bright, vivid, and crisp with great saturation and no fading. It transfers beautifully onto mugs, T-shirts, and tumblers, drying fast without smudges. I really appreciate that it works ICC-free, yet still delivers professional results. The ink is certified and feels reliable, and I’ve had zero clogging issues. Overall, this is a high-quality, easy-to-use sublimation ink that’s perfect for both hobby projects and small business use. Definitely recommend for anyone doing heat transfer printing.

Only Sublimation Ink for Me!!
I recently bought my second set of Hippo Sublimation Ink and continue to be thrilled with the results. This ink has proven to be a fantastic choice for my sublimation projects, delivering on all fronts. Hippo Sublimation Ink works exactly as promised. It sublimates effortlessly onto poly blend items, producing bright, vivid transfers every time. The colors are striking and true to the design, which is crucial for quality sublimation work. The results are consistently impressive, making this ink a reliable option for any project. One of the standout features is the great price. Hippo Sublimation Ink offers excellent value for money compared to other brands. Despite its affordability, it performs just as well—if not better—than more expensive options on the market. Using Hippo Ink in my Epson printer has been a breeze. The ink flows smoothly and doesn’t clog the printer, even after not being used for two weeks!!! I’ve had issues with other brands clogging my printer, leading to frustration and wasted time, not to mention all the maintenance puts wear and tear on the printer. With Hippo, there’s been no such problem, making it a hassle-free choice for sublimation printing. Hippo Sublimation Ink has exceeded my expectations in terms of performance, price, and ease of use. It’s the only ink I will use in my printer from now on. If you’re looking for a high-quality sublimation ink that’s both affordable and reliable, Hippo is an excellent choice. It delivers bright, beautiful transfers and maintains smooth operation without any of the typical issues associated with other brands. Highly recommended!

Great for Sublimation!
I’m a bit new to sublimation and was worried about having dull colors, but this ink is doing wonders! The quality is great, I can adjust the amount on the printer and get the exact, rich, vibrant colors I want. (I found some recommended settings for brightness, contrast, etc… and then tweak the cyan, magenta, and yellow to the desired amount.) I definitely recommend getting this ink! It’s so easy to refill the printer (I have an Eco tank 15000). The cost is not bad at all. I’ve only washed some of the items one time and so far the ink has remained unchanged. Seems like a winner to me!
